Ohio is one of the cheaper states to get licensed in and one of the more demanding ones to stay licensed in. The application is ten dollars. The continuing education, if you sell annuities or long-term care, is where the real obligation sits.
Twenty hours of approved pre-licensing education per line of authority, then the exam through PSI — not Pearson VUE, which catches agents who have licensed in a neighbouring state and assume the vendor carries over.
The steps, in order
- Finish 20 hours per line. Approved provider; the Department publishes the list.
- Get fingerprinted through WebCheck. Ohio runs a fingerprint-based BCI and FBI background check under ORC 3905.051. WebCheck locations are widespread — pharmacies, sheriff's offices — but the results still take days, so start here rather than last.
- Pass the exam with PSI. The combined Life, Accident and Health exam is 150 questions at 70% to pass.
- Apply through NIPR. Ten dollars plus a transaction fee. It is the cheapest application in this guide by an order of magnitude.
- Get appointed. Licence first, appointment second, business third.
What it costs
| Item | Cost | Paid to | | --- | --- | --- | | Pre-licensing course | $100–300 | Provider of your choice | | Exam | ≈ $42 | PSI | | Background check | ≈ $72 | Ohio AG WebCheck portal | | Licence application | $10 + fee | NIPR |
The background check costs roughly seven times the application. Confirm current amounts with the Ohio Department of Insurance before you pay — the exam fee in particular is quoted differently in different places.
After you're licensed
Twenty-four CE credits every two years, three of them approved ethics, renewing on the last day of your birth month. The credits must be posted to your record with the Department before the licence can renew, so finishing them on the last day is finishing them too late.
Two extra requirements that catch producers out, and both are exactly the products a phone agent ends up selling:
- Annuities. Holding a Life or Variable Annuity line and intending to sell annuities means a one-time 4-hour annuity course. It counts toward the 24.
- Long-term care. An initial 8-hour LTC course before you sell any, then a 4-hour refresher every renewal period, ongoing.
Neither is optional and neither is waived by experience. If you plan to work Medicare-adjacent or LTC business in Ohio, put the 8-hour course in the calendar the month you get licensed rather than the month you get your first LTC lead.
